Kunstenaarsverblijf, deel 2 (hoe ik de actualiteit tegenkwam) – Artist residency, part 2 (how I ran into reality)

In 2007 maakte ik mijn eerste in-situ werk in Schoonoord in opdracht van de Stichting Natuurkunst Drenthe. Dat was het begin van twee levendige liefdes.

In 2007 I created my first in-situ work in Schoonoord in commission of Foundation Art in Nature Drenthe. That was the start of two lively loves.

De eerste liefde; ik ben het pad van werken op locatie verder gaan onderzoeken. Nu, veertien jaar later, loop ik dit pad steeds verder. Het blijft intrigerend werk waarin ik me door de jaren steeds beter thuis ben gaan voelen.

The first love; I have been discovering the path of working on location. Now, fourteen years later, I still walk this path further and further. It stays intriuging work and I have been feeling better in this kind of work through the years.

De tweede liefde; ik werd gegrepen door het Drentse landschap en de fascinerende historische sporen die je er nog kunt aantreffen. Bijvoorbeeld de flintenwegen. Aangelegd tijdens de crisis in de jaren 30 van de 20^ste eeuw.

The second love; the landscape in Drenthe and the fascinating historic traces that one can still find there got a hold on me. For example the flint roads. Constructed during the crisis in the thirties of the 20th century.

Gister fietste ik het dorp uit en ontdekte de architecturale werking van pakken hooi. Opgestapeld in strak gelid. Torenhoog. Als een flatgebouw in de polder.

Yesterday I cycled out of the village and discovered the architectural effect of packs of hay. Piled tight in the groove. Towering. Like an apartment building in the polder.

Contrasterende kleuren benadrukken het strakke ritme. Maar de wind doet ook haar werk en verwaait het loshangend plastic. De boer is zijn tang vergeten.

Contrasting colours underline the the tight rhythm. But the wind also does her work and blows about the loose hanging plastic. The farmer forgot his pincers.

Maar dan dringt zich een heftig beeld op. Wanneer ik rechts van me kijk, zie ik de open polder. Maar aan de linkerkant van de weg staat een industriële installatie. Omheind met hoog gaas en daarboven prikkeldraad. Gasboringen, realiseer ik me.

But then a violent image imposes itself. When I look right, I see the open polder. But on the left side of the road there is an industrial installation. Fenced off with high wire gauze and above that barbed wire. Gas drillings, I realise.

Een bord wijst me op de gevaren. Op een merkwaardige manier doet mij dit denken aan de  Rotterdamse Botlek. Andere schaal, dezelfde sfeer.

A sign points me out the dangers. In a curious way this reminds me of the Botlek-area near Rotterdam. Different scale, same atmosphere.

De pijpleidingen in verschillende formaten. En een paar tanks met het woord “schoon” erop geverfd. Wat zou er schoon zijn? De buitenkant, de binnenkant of de inhoud? De gaswinning is een actueel onderwerp. Ik had me niet gerealiseerd dat de installaties zo nadrukkelijk in het landschap aanwezig zijn.

The pipelines in different sizes. And a couple of tanks with the word “clean” painted on them. What would be clean? The outside, the inside of the content? Gas mining is a current topic. I had not yet realised how prominently present these installations are in the landscape.

De boor steekt als een raket omhoog en is van ver te zien. En aan de andere kant van de weg grazen de koeien.

The drill stands up like a rocket and is visible from far away. And on the other side of the road cows are grazing.

Kunstenaarsverblijf, deel 1 (en wat vooraf ging) – Artist residency, part 1 (and what came before)

Afgelopen augustus bleek dat mijn werkverblijf in Frankrijk opnieuw uitgesteld moest worden. Dit keer doordat het huis en atelier onbruikbaar was geworden door extreme wateroverlast. Ik was erg teleurgesteld, had er zó naar uitgekeken.

Last August it turned out that my residency in France had to be canceled again. This time because the house and workshop had become unusable due to extreme flooding. I was very disappointed, had been looking forward to it só much.

Maar een paar dagen later kreeg ik de uitnodiging om 48 uur door te brengen in een clarissenklooster. Een bijzondere ervaring. Het ijzeren dagritme van de zusters leverde een heftige strijd op met mijn vrijheidsdrang. Terwijl hun meditatieve zang tijdens hun diensten zich als een mantra omhoog kringelde.

But a few days later I got the invitation to spend 48 hours in a clare monastery. A special experience. The iron daily rhythm of the sisters yielded a fierce battle with my urge for freedom. Meanwhile their meditative singing during their services swirled up like a mantra.

Vervolgens kreeg ik de mogelijkheid om een maand in Drenthe door te brengen. Voor inspiratie. Om de rust weer te vinden om me te laten dragen door het karakter van de plek. Gister kwam ik aan, in een bijzonder huis. Halverwege 19^de eeu

Vrouwenhanden - Women's hands

In opdracht van Textielfestival Twente zal ik de installatie "Vrouwenhanden" in-situ installeren op landgoed Twickel bij Delden. Dit werk zal onderdeel zijn van "Forces of nature catwalk", een route langs 14 locatiegebonden werken in Twente.

In commission of Textielfestival Twente I will create the in-situ installation "Women's hands" at Twickel estate in Delden NL.
This work wil be part of "Forces of nature catwalk", a route along 14 in-situ art works in  Twente.

Focus - 10

To get some positive things contrasting with the daily news, I try to focus on visual details and objects around me. They are dragging the canal nearby. Apart of the intriguing objects that  come up, their machinery and tools look fascinating too.

Wat positiefs als tegenhanger van het dagelijks nieuws. Ik probeer me te concentreren op visuele details en objecten om me heen. Ze zijn het kanaal aan het dreggen. Behalve de  intrigerende objecten die omhoog komen, zien ook hun machines en gereedschappen er fascinerend uit.

Focus - 9

To get some positive things contrasting with the daily news, I try to focus on visual details and objects around me. They are dragging the canal nearby. These intriguing objects came up.   

Wat positiefs als tegenhanger van het dagelijks nieuws. Ik probeer me te concentreren op visuele details en objecten om me heen. Ze zijn het kanaal aan het dreggen. Deze intrigerende objecten kwamen naar boven.

Focus - 7

To get some positive things contrasting with the daily news, I try to focus on visual details and objects around me. This bird hit our window and left a gost-like imprint.

Wat positiefs als tegenhanger van het dagelijks nieuws. Ik probeer me te concentreren op visuele details en objecten om me heen. Deze klaproos wortelt hoog in een abdij ruïne.
