Ine van Son

Deze installatie onstond en ontwikkelde zich gedurende 21 dagen, tijdens mijn artist-in-residence periode in Frankrijk 2017.

This installation arose and developed during 21 days, during my artist-in-residence in France 2017.

Twee cirkels, de één bestaande uit schelpen en de andere bestaande uit houtskool.

Two circles, one consisting of shells and the other consisting of charcoal.

De schelpen staan voor het element water.

The shells represent the element water.

De kooltjes voor het element vuur.

The charcoal represents the element fire.

Aan bezoekers vroeg ik om te reageren op dit beeld; zouden ze de opstelling willen veranderen? Dingen weghalen of toevoegen?

I asked visitors to react to this image; would they want to change the arrangement? Take away or add things?

Elke dag fotografeerde ik het beeld. Ik reageerde op de ingrepen van anderen, en anderen reageerden weer op mijn ingrepen.Zo was het beeld constant in beweging.

Every day I photographed the image. I reacted to the intervention of others, and others reacted to my interventions.This way, the image was constantly evolving.

Here's how the proces developped.

Dag 1: het vuur breidt zich uit en beweegt zich naar het water.

Day 1: the fire expanded and moves towards the water.

Dag 2: het water opent zich om het vuur in zich te vangen.

Day 2: the water opens itself to catch the fire.

Dag 3: Nee, toch niet. Als het vuur een heel klein stukje verder loopt, besluit het water om zich er boven langs te vormen.

Day 3: No, not so. As the fire walks on a tiny bit further, the water descides to adjust itself overhead.

Dag 4: In een omtrekkende beweging heeft het water het vuur ingesloten.

Day 4: With an evading movement, the water has closed in the fire.

Via de laatst overgebleven kleine opening tracht het vuur uit de omarming van het water los te breken.

Through the last remaining small opening the fire tries to break loose from the embrace of the water.

Dag 5: De omhelzing van het water wordt losser. Het vuur duwt zich verder in de opening.

Day 5: The embrace of the water releases. The fire pushes itself further into the small opening.

Dag 6: Maar het water duwt niet. Het water volgt soepel de beweging van het vuur.

Day 6: But the water does  not push. The water follows the movement of the fire, easy-going.

Dag 7: Het vuur duwt zich op nog drie plaatsen door het water heen...

Day 7: The fire pushes itself on three more spots through the water...

Dag 8: en legt zichzelf in een schelp. Of is het andersom: neemt de schelp het vuur in zich op?

Day 8: and places itself in a shell. Or is it the other way around: does the shell take in the fire? 

Dag 9: Er wordt steeds meer vuur opgenomen in de schelpen...

Day 9: More fire is taken in by the shells...

Het vuur duwt tegen zijn begrenzingen.

The fire pushes against its limitations.

Dag 10: Dan vloeit het water opzij. Water en vuur bewegen als één. De cirkel opent zich.

Day 10: Then the water flows aside. Water and fire move as one. The circle opens.

Dag 11: De vrijgekomen ruimte in de kern wordt door het water opgevuld.

Day 11: The vacant space in the centre gets filled with water.

Dag 12: Het vuur kruipt als een slang over de grond, verder van de kern vandaan. Eén schelp voor zich uit duwend.

Day 12: The fire sneaks like a snake over the earth, further away from the heart. Pushing one shell along.

Dag 13: Het water vleit zichzelf in de kom ontstaan door de beweging van het vuur.

Day 13: The water nestles itself in the bowl created by the movement of the fire.

Dag 14: Aarde en vuur draaien om elkaar, elkaar omhelzend.

Day 14: Earth and fire turn around each other, embracing each other.

Dag 15: Water en vuur gaan in elkaar op, stromen in elkaar over.

Day 15: Water and fire flow together, dissolve into each other.

Dag 16: De cirkels blijven bewegen, worden weer losser. Maar dan mengt zich plotseling het element Aarde in het beeld; een mol heeft zijn aanwezigheid getekent.

Day 16: The circles keep on moving, get released again. But then suddenly the element Earth mixes in the image; a mole has signed its presence.

Dag 17: Het vuur heeft zich op de aarde genesteld, het water blijft er onderaan wat tegenaan duwen.

Day 17: The fire has nested itself on the earth, the water stays pushing at the bottum.

Dag 18: Maar de mol duwt meer aarde omhoog. Het vuur wordt weer van de kern weggeduwd.

Day 18: But the mole pushes more earth upward. The fire gets pushed away from the centre.

Dag 19: De invloed van de aarde is groot. Wat eerder zo'n mooie draaiende beweging was, is nu vervloeid in een zware, ongeordende massa.

Day 19: The influence of the earth is large. What earlier was such a beautiful turning movement, has now turned into a heavy randomized accumulation of ground.

Dag 20: En dan gebeurt er iets merkwaardigs. Er verschijnen stukjes aardewerk, stukjes hout, takjes. Ze verwijderen zich van de hoop aarde. Of komen ze er juist naar toe?

Day 20: And than something remarkable happens. Pieces of stoneware appear, pieces of wood, branches. They move away from the heap of earth. Or do they come towards it?

Ze zien er zo zachtaardig en breekbaar uit, die stukjes hout en aardewerk...

They look so gentle and fragile, those pieces of wood and stoneware...

Dag 21: En dan mengt de tijd zich dwingend in de installatie. Er volgt een nacht van hevige regen. Dit heeft een grote invloed op het werk: de hoop aarde zakt in. De schelpen en stukjes kool raken deels bedolven.

Day 21: And then time interferes with the installation in an imparative way. A night follows with heavy rainfall. This has a great influence on the work: the heap of earth caves in. The shells and pieces of charcoal get partly covered.

Op dit punt geef ik het op... Ik heb niet de moed, de inspiratie, om verder te gaan. De aarde, het weer, hebben me duidelijk gemaakt dat dit het is... Hier komt een einde aan een mooi gesprek in beelden.

At this point, I give up... I do not have the courage, the inspiration, to move further with it. Earth, the weather, has made me understand that this is it... Here a beautiful conversation in images comes to an end.

Veel dank aan hen die meewerkten. Het was een mooie speelplaats waar we samen vorm gaven aan een 'gesprek' door onze fantasie de vrije loop te laten.
