In het vorige deel van dit blog had ik het over de flintenwegen, aangelegd tijdens de crisisjaren in de jaren 30 van de 20^ste eeuw. Volgens mij heette dit toen “werkverschaffing”. Het doet me denken aan mijn vaders vader, die in dat kader ingezet werd bij het graven van een kanaal.

Mijn grootvader dus. Een man van 12 ambachten en 13 ongelukken. Een landloze boer. Pachtte her en der een stukje land als hij het kon betalen. Had een koe die mijn vader moest laten grazen in de wegberm. Deed allerlei klusjes om wat inkomen te vergaren, voor zijn gezin met 8 kinderen.

In the previous part of this blog I was talking about the flint roads, constructed during the crisis in the thirties of the 20th century. I think it was called “unemployment relief works”. It reminds me of my fathers father, who was mobilized at the digging of a canal.

My grandfather. A man of twelve crafts and thirteen accidents. A landless farmer. He took on lease a piece of land here and there if he could afford it. Owned a cow that my father had to take out grazing on the roadside. Did all kinds of jobs to gather income for his family with 8 children.

Dit is één van de weinige foto’s die ik van hem heb, in pak met stropdas op de bruiloft van mijn vader.

This is one of the few photographs of him that I have, in costume with tie on my fathers wedding.  

Die armoede is gelukkig achter ons. Maar de sporen uit die tijd zijn als een teken van onze voorouders.

This poverty luckily is far behind us. But the traces of that time are like a sign from our forfathers.

Ik fiets naar Nieuw Amsterdam/ Veenoord en kom daar nog een teken uit ons verleden tegen. Het logement waar Vincent van Gogh twee maanden logeerde. Ik kijk naar de vaart waar hij indertijd ook naar gekeken heeft. Hij schreef zijn broer blijkbaar over de lange turfvaarten. Het uitzicht zal toen wel anders zijn geweest. Hoewel de vaarten nog steeds als messen door het land snijden.

I cycle to Nieuw Amsterdam/Veenoord and meet another sign from our past. The guest house where Vincent van Gogh spent two months. I look at the canal where he then has looked at. He apparently wrote to his brother about the long turf canals. The view must have been different by then. Although the canals still cut through the land like knives.

Ik schijn een trage ziel te hebben. Wanneer ik ergens heen ga, heb ik tijd nodig om tot rust te komen. Pas dan ga ik dingen echt zien. De tijd die mijn ziel nodig heeft om me achterna te reizen. Maar nu zijn we weer samen. Ik ontdek steeds meer in het landschap. Zoals deze prachtige bomen.

I seem to have a slow soul. When I go somewhere, I need time to calme down. Only then I start really seeing things. The time that my soul needs to travel after me. But now we are together again. I discover more and more in the landscape. Like these beautiful trees.

Toch kom ik ook weer gaswinnings-locaties tegen. Ze zijn er alom en niet te missen. Is deze locatie buiten gebruik? Of gaat het slechts om één of andere aansluiting die buiten gebruik is?

But I run into other gas drilling locations again too. They are there omnipresent. Is this location out of order? Or is it just some kind of connection which is out of order?

Op de terugweg heb ik het geluk om deze prachtige kleine weg te vinden. De draai in het veld, de weg die zich daar omheen buigt. Het lijkt bijna een dans.

On my way back I am lucky enough to find this beautiful small road. The turn in the field, the road that bends itself around it. It almost looks like a dance.
